Areopoli: Once the capital of Mani, Areopoli is a town steeped in tradition and historical significance. Its stone-paved alleys and iconic tower houses reflect its role as the birthplace of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The town square, named after Petrobey Mavromichalis, is a lively spot lined with tavernas, cafés and shops, perfect for experiencing authentic Maniot hospitality.

Limeni: One of Mani’s most picturesque coastal villages, Limeni is a stunning blend of stone-built houses, turquoise waters and seafood tavernas right at the water’s edge. Once the seaport of Areopoli, Limeni retains its charm with traditional Maniot architecture and serene sea views. Dining on fresh-caught seafood with the sun setting over the bay is a quintessential Mani experience.

Diros Caves (Vlychada Cave): Located near Pyrgos Dirou, the Caves of Diros are among the most significant natural sites in the world. Embark on a subterranean journey through time via boat and on foot, navigating through a labyrinth of spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. E-tickets available at www.diros-caves.gr

Vathia Village: Perched on a hilltop, Vathia is renowned for its tower houses that exemplify traditional Maniot architecture. Walking through the now-deserted village will take you back to how life in Mani used to be. Panoramic views of the Messinian Gulf, especially during sunset, are a must-have experience.

Cape Tenaro (Cape Matapan): As the southernmost point of mainland Greece and the second southernmost point of continental Europe, Cape Tenaro holds significant historical and mythological importance. In ancient Greek mythology, it was considered the entrance to Hades. The easy hike to the lighthouse at the tip of the cape will fill you with stunning sea views and an aura like no other.

Traditional tower houses and war towers: Scattered throughout the Mani Peninsula, these stone structures were historically used for defensive purposes. You will see them everywhere in Mani, with the village of Flomochori boasting the highest number.

Byzantine Churches: The Mani Peninsula is dotted with numerous Byzantine-era churches, many featuring exceptional frescoes. These small, often secluded churches provide insight into the area’s religious history and architectural styles. The Monastery of Dekoulos at Oitylo village is one of the must-sees for history and architecture enthusiasts.

Tigani Peninsula: Home to the ruins of a medieval castle, the Tigani Peninsula offers visitors a blend of history and natural beauty. The site is accessible via a hiking trail and provides panoramic views of the surrounding sea and landscape.
